The Big List of Wedding Dress Styles

Ball Gown/Princess

Ball gown

Justin Alexander

This silhouette has become one of the most iconic, as it emulates the fairy tale wedding that so many brides love. This style works well for most body shapes, particularly triangles as it flares over the hips. The size of the dress could be overwhelming on a more petite bride though.

Carolina Herrera Fall 2015

A-line dresses feature a fitted bust that the flows away from the body in an A shape. This makes the silhouette very flattering as it will define the waist and shape of the upper body while floating over any areas that you may not want to draw attention to.

The key difference between an A-line and a Modified A-line is that the later has a silhouette that holds closer to the hips. This style is a mid-way point between an A-line and a Trumpet. As this silhouette lays closer to the hips triangle and Figure 8 shapes may not be as comfortable in a modified A-line as a traditional A-line

Essence of Australia 2015

The trumpet is a mid-way point between a modified A-line and a Mermaid silhouette. A trumpet dress will be fitted to mid-thigh and will flare from there. A trumpet dress will allow a bride easier movement than a mermaid silhouette.

The Mermaid silhouette is very romantic and shows off all of your curves. If you’re looking for a more conservative style this won’t be the silhouette for you. If you want to emphasise your curves, or build the illusion of a curvier figure this style is a great option. Often both Trumpet and Mermaid styles will be strapless, so a matching shrug may be required if you are being married in a church.

The timeless and elegant silhouette is achieved through the use of one clean bias-cut piece of fabric that flows in a straight line down the body. The narrow shape is great for women with lean figures or those who are wanting to show off their curves. This style leave little to the imagination and will emphasise any bumps or bludges and adds centimetres so it is not an ideal silhouette for anyone with a fuller figure.
